Similar to traditional wax candles, clear gel candles are commonly produced from a hydrocarbon base stock. The use of a gelled hydrocarbon base stock provides the additional advantage of transparency. Candlewic sells and markets a series of patented gels (US Patent 5,879,694) for use in the manufacture of clear gel candles under Versagel™: brand names. Candle gel from Candlewic may be purchased in 35-pound plastic pails or 360-pound drums.

Candles made with gel perform much differently than those made with paraffin. Please review safety factor sheet before use. Testing for proper wick size is strongly recommended. Working temperature for this product is much higher than for paraffin wax. All applicable safety procedures should be maintained. Burning temperatures for this product are also higher than for paraffin wax. All applicable safety procedures should be considered. All manufactures of gel candles should consider using wick assemblies with a neck height of at least 6mm in order to firmly hold the wick in place and keep the flame from reaching the very bottom of the candle container.

Fragrances with a non-polar characteristic are most preferred for gel candles. The non-polar character does not deteriorate the gel strength and is completely soluble. The second variable to look for in gel fragrances is the flash point. Fragrances with flash points over 170 degrees F are recommended. Following is a list of our fragrances that are polar and non-polar along with the fragrances that have flash points less than 170 degrees F (<170).

CG-1 Versagel™: Low Density
A low-polymer gel suitable for clear candles with low fragrance loads, typically 0-3%. Recommended for use with gel candles using no embeds and a very low fragrance of up to 1/2 oz. per pound of gel.

CG-2 Versagel™: Medium Density
A medium-polymer gel suitable for clear candles with medium to high fragrance loads, typically 0-5% or up to 1/2 oz. per pound of gel. Recommended for use with gel candles that suspend non-flammable embeds, and gel candles that are intended to be shipped or transported.

CG-3 Versagel™: High Density
A high-polymer gel suitable for clear candles with medium to high fragrance loads, typically 0-5% or up to 1 oz. per pound of gel, and the ability to suspend dense non-flammable embeds or decorative non-flammable particles. Gel candles made with HP are transported or shipped extremely well without shifting.
