GREENING Your Product
Line and Your Bottom Line.

American’s are becoming more aware of the ingredients that make up the products they purchase. Whether this is a result of the growth of natural supermarkets like Whole Foods, it is hard to say. What is certain is that the result has been an exploding demand for natural, organic and fair trade products. Every market has been touched by this wave and most have responded with products, which include some natural ingredients.

“From 1998 to 2004, sales of natural products rose 51.9% to surpass $2.6 billion. By the end of 2006, retail sales of natural and organic personal care products soared to $6 billion; by 2012, that figure could be $8 billion.”  - Marketresearch.com

Nature’s Gift
For centuries candle makers have made candles from Mother Nature’s beeswax.  Its use can be traced back to the times of the ancient Greeks and Persians. Beeswax is a by-product of honey production, and is natural, sustainable, and contains no GMO’s (not genetically-modified in any way). That takes care of all the buzz words you hear today.  What many people don’t know is that beeswax also naturally moisturizes and protects the skin. Savvy companies are not only including it in candles, but also soaps, lip balms, body butters, lotions and body balms.

Candlewic has been offering our customers this natural wax for more than 35 years and today we are pleased to offer beeswax as an organic product. Our certified organic beeswax has been harvested in the Himalayan Valley’s of Mt. Everest, and is offered to you through conscientious trade linkages with the rural beekeepers. It has been refined of impurities to retain a golden honey color and fragrance. Now you can add this valuable organic component to your products. Green your product line and Green your bottom line!

Your Beexwax Facts:

  • It has been stated that a worker bee travels more than 150,000 miles to produce one pound of wax.
  • The honeybee is a social insect living in large colonies of from 20,000 to 80,000 individuals.
  • Honeybees communicate through dance "language" to tell other bees the direction and distance of nectar sources from the hive.

In today’s candle market there is no doubt that natural and organic are going to be growing segments of the market. If you have not yet tried beeswax (even organic), Soy or Palm now is the best time to start. Test how your candles will sell during the busiest part of the candle season.

learn how to make candles.

CHANDLER'S CORNER

When I go to the custom wick builder, I am asked what type of wick base I should use. Which one is best?

It may be appropriate to first cover what are the critical dimensions of the base. The first one is the diameter which is available in 15mm (about the size of a dime), 20mm (about the size of a Nickel) and 33mm (in most instances exactly the same size as the votive cup).

The next dimension is the neck height, this is the base which holds the wick. These are available in 3 sizes, 3 mm, 6 mm and 9mm. In many instances people like the 3 mm because it usually consumes all of the wax and gets the most burning time from the candle. If you use the 3mm neck, it’s critical that you have chosen the right wick because when the wick reaches the bottom of the glass, there will be a lot of heat. The 9 mm is always necessary when making gel candles to ensure the wick burns out before reaching the bottom of the container. You may also want to consider using this neck height as an extra safety precaution.

When making tea lights you should always use the 15 mm base. Most tea lights have a recessed cavity to hold this size clip. This clip can also be used to make votives, especially if using the wick pin.

The 20 mm is an all-around basic clip that can be used for votives, container and tins. The 33 mm clip is best used for votives when you are not using the Votive Pins (M-63-P) because this clip will help keep the wick centered at the bottom of the votive cup.

If you need any other assistance on the wick base or even the coating be sure to call me and our staff at Candlewic.

PROJECT:
One-Pour Tins

If you are just starting out in the candle making business and are looking for a good “gift” or project for this holiday season, a Natural candle in a tin fits both needs. These tins are easy to make and are easy to personalize. Most of the time tins do not always require coloring, and the natural color of the Soy was works very well, especially for Aromatherapy candles.

The aluminum tin container eliminates the need to worry over “wet spots” commonly found in glass container candles, and does not require a second pour. They are simple to make, easy to decorate, and eliminate shipping damages. So if you are in need of a project for your group, this is perfect! And, to really reduce your cost check out our clearance fragrances.

Ingredients
Aluminum Tins
Soy 125
Wick Assembly
Color (optional)
Fragrance
Glue Dots

Instructions

Step 1
Heat your Soy 125 to around 150°F if you are not adding any color. If you are adding color heat your wax up to around 180°F. Add your dye and let cool back down to 120°F.

Step 2
Remove the lids from your tins and arrange on the pouring table. Some people insert wicks first with a glue dot and some add the wick after they pour. Both methods work well.

Step 3
Add your fragrance and pour.

Step 4
Let cool and decorate the tin as desired. Tins get hot, so be sure to label the finished candle appropriately.
