2012 En-Light-Eners

Another Good Year

December 01, 2012 | 2012 En-Light-Eners

On behalf of the entire Candlewic staff, I want to sincerely thank you for all of your support in 2012. Without the support of our customers we would not be entering our 43rd year of business in 2013. We often write that over the 42 years there have been many changes in the business environment, but in our little "candle world" very little has really changed. Yes, there are new types of waxes, new fragrances being introduced and new jars designed, but the basic premise of melting the wax, adding color/fragrance and pouring remains virtually unchanged. In the technology world, it seems that every year a new product arrives another one becomes obsolete. Read More

Resources for Candle Makers

October 01, 2012 | 2012 En-Light-Eners

The term "candle making" can take on many meanings for our readers. For the beginner, candle making is taking a milk carton or extra container and pouring wax in it to make their own candle. At the opposite end of the spectrum is the large manufacturer that produces thousands of candles a day and, in some instances, employs thousands of employees. Most candlemakers are somewhere in between, and the needs for businesses vary greatly. Read More

Choosing the Right Wax

August 01, 2012 | 2012 En-Light-Eners

To an "outsider" candle making should be easy; you melt wax, add color/fragrance, put the wick in, light and watch the beautiful glow of the candle with that excellent fragrance throw. Don't we all wish it was that easy? No matter if it is your first time or you have been in the business for over 40 years (like us), it is always important to review to make sure you are using the right wax for your application. There are a number of resources available to help you evaluate this, but in the end the key is choosing one that will work for YOU. Read More

Candle Making Kits

July 01, 2012 | 2012 En-Light-Eners

One of the biggest challenges in candle making is learning where to start and what materials you might need to get started. If you start from "scratch", getting the proper quantities of everything can be difficult. You need to know how much wax to purchase to fill a certain container, that wicks are sold in 100 piece count, and that jars are sold at 12 pieces. It gets even more complex if you want to make several different types of candles. The solution to overcome some of the above obstacles is to start your candle making venture with a kit. A kit is great to start with because it has all the right quantities of all the materials to try your hand at the craft. The question then is...with the wide array of kits available, how do you know which one to choose that would be best for you? Read More

June 01, 2012 | 2012 En-Light-Eners

Over the years people have started their candle business in many different ways and for many different reasons. For some, the business may have grown out of a hobby they enjoyed, for others it may be because of the loss of a job. May 01, 2012 | 2012 En-Light-Eners

It is hard to believe the "un-official" start to summer is only days away. While many are busy planning their vacations, camps and activities for the summer, we encourage all customers to consider doing several shows this summer -- even if that is something you have never done. Craft shows, street festivals and fairs can be a great way to improve your sales for the entire year if you choose the right show and do everything you can to maximize the event. In this issue of the En-light-ener we will outline how to approach this in three steps. Read More

With Every Season, a Change in Process

April 01, 2012 | 2012 En-Light-Eners

The spring season is always an interesting time, because you never know if you will get that late March snowfall or a heat wave in early April, as we have now. Mark Twain once said, "Everybody talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it." For those of you that have made candles for many years, you know that if you don't do anything in your process to regulate weather change it may result in inferior candles. Read More

The Whole Ball of Wax

March 01, 2012 | 2012 En-Light-Eners

These days there is so much to choose from on the television that you would think some of the simpler things would go overlooked. But based on the number of shows on the Discovery Network, Science and other local networks, people are extremely intrigued by how things are made, and I am no exception. It is always amazing to see how candy bars, American flags, locomotives and even clothes pins are made. The process from start to finish - no matter what the product is - can be amazing to watch. Since many of our new employees are intrigued by the process, we thought our customers who use the end products would be even MORE interested in the process. Read More

Choosing the Right Color

February 01, 2012 | 2012 En-Light-Eners

Our industry, including ourselves, focuses a great deal on the importance of fragrance when making candles. But an important aspect of the candle is also the color. In addition to people enjoying the fragrance, for many they also need it to match the decor of the home as well. In many instances, the choice of the pillar is based solely on color and not fragrance. Read More
