Candle Making Trends

One of the most important things any company must do is to continue to meet changing customer demands in a fast-paced retail environment. Unfortunately, in the candle market, there can be multiple trends that must be monitored. Fragrances, the type of jars being used, colors, and in some cases the wax formulation, must continually be updated to offer the consumer the best possible product.

All four have their own separate trends, but in some instances,  they move in the same direction. The fragrance market will follow the color and apparel markets. When Pantone announces its "color of the year,” clothes incorporate this color, beauty products are launched, and house paints and accessories are readily available. In case you missed it, the 2019 Color of the Year is Living Coral.

Pantone LLC is a U.S. corporation headquartered in Carlstadt, New Jersey. The company is best known for its Pantone Matching System, a proprietary color space used in a variety of industries, primarily printing, though sometimes in the manufacture of colored paint, fabric, and plastics.

Pantone describes Living Coral as "an animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energizes and enlivens with a softer edge.”

As you can imagine, the question you may have as a small candle company is how to compete in this environment and keep up with trends while also being sure not to jump "all in.” The good news is that the true measures of strength for a small company are its abilities to change very quickly and offer true personalization. Direct feedback from customers can be an extremely valuable tool when adapting to the changing demands of today’s consumers.

Of all trends, probably the one that must constantly be evaluated is the fragrance market. It will take cues from the Pantone Color of the year, and, as you will read later, I think you will see that these fragrances draw inspiration from "animating and life-affirming.”

The question is always, "Of all the new fragrances on the market, which ones will be best for my business?” There is a great deal of your own market research you can do. When doing a craft show or trade show, or even when taking orders, ask your customers if there is a particular fragrance they may want. Suggest some you are already looking at. This type of interaction is as valuable as a focus group that large companies have access to. Be bold, and offer some unique fragrances, but also be sure to have your "go to” on hand.

Certain fragrances – like your Lavenders, Vanilla and Cinnamons – will always do well, but it can’t hurt to freshen even some of these fragrances up so that the customer is enticed to try your new products.

Take Lavender to a new level with Mint Leaf and Lavender. With top notes of Lavender, Mint, Saffron, and Marine; middle notes of Floral, Apple, Violet, and Coconut; and bottom notes of Amber, Tonka, and Musk; it hits many of today’s trends of floral, home-baked, and musk.

As you can see in the wide range of notes used in all of these top spring fragrances, florals, musk and "clean” smelling fragrances are dominating the newer offerings and reflect the Living Coral color theme. We stress that it’s great to have trendy fragrances as part of your collection, but always be prepared to move on to the newest and fastest growing trend once Pantone launches its color of the year for 2020.

CHANDLER'S CORNER

One of the most frequently asked questions I get is, Hi. I'm Chandler.
"I have never made a candle. Should I start with a kit or purchase the materials separately?"
The best answer we can provide is that it depends on where you are going to take your "candle making" experience. If you know it is a one-time deal, then a kit is sometimes the best starting point. They have, for the most part, everything you need, and you do not have to piecemeal the items. In addition, you do not have to purchase extra material that you may not need. For example, when purchasing rolls of wick, the 8-ounce roll is generally the smallest one we have available. This will make quite a few candles. If you know you are not making any more candles, then you will have surplus material. The kit generally has enough material to make exactly what the kit contains. The downside to the kits is that we have already selected the fragrances and colors for you. Our kits always include popular fragrance/color combinations, but this can remove the customization many people like to have when making homemade crafts.

Purchasing individual items will allow you to purchase the exact colors and fragrances you want, but then you must also select the proper wax, the correct size wicks, and the other items you will need to make the candles you desire. If you’re only making one, two or three candles, then we would recommend that you purchase the kits and maybe add a couple of small bottles of the specific fragrances you want.

No matter which option you chose, we believe that you will find candle making to be a fun and rewarding experience. Candles make great gifts for friends, neighbors, co-worker, and teachers.
